Absolution : Evolution

What a difference a week makes.

Last Friday brought Kuhl together in our Cinderford studio at the edges of The Forest Of Dean.

I had managed to re-shape 'Absolution' into the semblance of a lyric. We were a day late, so the song I turned up with was different from the day before. And so much more refined.

We threw ourselves right back into recording and after a couple of hours the vocal tracks were in place. Time to try overdubs of one old song and one new one.

I was happy with the way things had gone, listened to the mix on the way back home through the dark and windy Gloucestershire night.

But, the track wasn't right.

So, after a few hours sleep I began the good old William Burroughs technique of cut and paste. The middle became the end, the last verse was dropped, I trimmed and snipped and edited the hell out of the song until a four minute thing ended up at 2.01.

And then throughout the week I snipped some more, bounced back and forth with Mr Kuhl and we ended up with a reasonable edit at 1.49...

Then I doubled vocals, added high speed chipmonk choruses, some ADT and then got another mix bounced back. Then I suggested an oasis of funk calm just before the final blast of the track. And that's what happened... Complete Kuhl backing vocals and a blistering guitar solo that came as a welcome surprise.

So now the track is done - 2.49 in total. I have nothing to change or add.

Absolution complete!

You'll find the recorded lyric below, but you'll have to wait for the track...

We're preparing the album proper now, so the lid is on for a little while longer...

Watch this space!

Good Time Girls in the dead of night all looking for mass destruction

Sailor boys on a weekend haul, looking for a new instruction

Downhome kids with Backstreet minds covered in confusion

For a dollar a crime they’ll wait in line looking for absolution

See the girl with blue sky eyes starting up a revolution

She bruised my soul with storm-cloud lies and a jack-knife contribution

I’m hospitalised with heartbreak sighs and a thirty day contusion

Let me in you Preacher Man - I need some absolution

So wake me, Shake me, shake that girl with the red dress on

Here come’s Johnny down the stony road, looking for absolution

It’s a wake me, shake me, we all need absolution

Wake me, shake me, absolution

Wake me, shake me, I’m looking for absolution

Wake me, shake me, absolution

So wake me, Shake me, shake that girl with the red dress on

Here come’s Johnny down the stony road, looking for absolution

So wake me, Shake me, shake that girl with the red dress on

Here come’s Johnny down the stony road, looking for absolution

Absolution
